Chart Your Path to Surprising Wealth:

Track Your Net Worth and Celebrate Your Journey to Financial Freedom!

Understanding your net worth is an important metric on the path to financial independence. It’s a clear snapshot of where you stand financially and a powerful tool for measuring your progress towards your financial goals. At Surprising Wealth, we believe that anyone, regardless of income level, can achieve financial independence with intentional decisions and a long-term perspective. Calculating your net worth is an essential part of this journey.

What is Net Worth?

Net worth is the total value of all your assets minus your liabilities. In simpler terms, it’s what you own minus what you owe. Your assets include things like cash, investments, real estate, and personal property. Your liabilities include debts such as mortgages, car loans, student loans, and credit card balances.

Why Calculate Your Net Worth?

  1. Measure Financial Health: Knowing your net worth gives you a clear picture of your financial health. It helps you understand how your wealth is distributed and where you might need to make adjustments.
  2. Track Progress: Calculating your net worth regularly allows you to track your financial progress over time. It’s motivating to see your net worth grow as you pay down debt and build up assets.
  3. Set Goals: Understanding your net worth helps you set realistic financial goals. Whether you’re aiming to pay off debt, save for a home, or retire early, knowing where you stand financially is the first step.
  4. Make Informed Decisions: By calculating your net worth, you can make more informed financial decisions. It helps you see the impact of your spending and saving habits, and how changes can move you closer to financial independence.

Just Starting Out on Your FI Journey? Here’s Why Net Worth Tracking Matters!

Tracking your net worth, especially when you’re new to the concept of financial independence, is a powerful way to see the impact of your financial decisions over time. It can be challenging to start with small savings and/or limited financial eduction, but every step you take towards learning, saving and investing adds up. I like to think that what is measured is managed. Meaning, your wealthbuilding journey will be top of mind more often when you track your actions. By tracking your net worth growth, you can celebrate the gradual growth and stay motivated. This practice helps you recognize that building wealth is a marathon, not a sprint. Each dollar saved and invested compounds, leading to significant financial gains in the long run. Remember, everyone’s journey starts somewhere, and your early efforts are laying the foundation for future prosperity.

Feeling Debt-Burdened and Living Paycheck to Paycheck? Is It Time to Face Your Financial Fears?

Empower yourself to break free from the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle and start building a brighter financial future. For households burdened by debt and living paycheck to paycheck, tracking net worth might seem daunting, but it’s a crucial step towards financial stability. Understanding your financial situation in its entirety allows you to make informed decisions and set realistic goals. By regularly monitoring your net worth, you can see the incremental progress you’re making, even if it feels slow. This practice can help you stay focused and motivated to pay down debt, save, and invest. It’s a brave step to confront your financial reality, but doing so empowers you to take control of your finances and build a secure future.

Well on Your Way to FI but Living in the Boring Middle?

We are right there with you.  Keep Going!

For those already on their way to financial independence, the middle stage can feel monotonous as you steadily accumulate assets. If you are someone who does really well with acheivement and checking off boxes on your list, tracking your net worth during this phase is a great way to maintain motivation and see your progress. It’s easy to get discouraged when the excitement of starting and the thrill of reaching the goal are far apart, but each update in your net worth reminds you of the strides you’re making. Set smaller sub-goals along the way that you can celebrate: 10% FI, 20% FI, Each $100,000 of net worth, CoastFI, LeanFI, etc. Consider also tracking other metrics like the number of shares owned or cash flow from investments to diversify your sense of achievement. This can keep you energized and committed, knowing that every dollar saved and invested is bringing you closer to financial freedom.

For others, if you have a well thought out plan, have all your systems in place with automated investing etc, then this might be a time to work on other areas of building your Dream Life. Think about ways to enhance your physical and mental health, invest in relationships, develop new skills, or explore hobbies and passions that bring you joy. By working on these non-financial aspects, you’re enriching your life and creating a fulfilling and well-rounded journey to financial independence.

How to Calculate Your Net Worth

Calculating your net worth is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to get a clear picture of your financial situation:

  1. List Your Assets: Start by listing all your assets and their current market values. This can include:
    • Cash in checking and savings accounts
    • Investments (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, retirement accounts)
    • Real estate (home, rental properties, land)
    • Personal property (cars, jewelry, collectibles)
    • Any other valuable assets
  2. List Your Liabilities: Next, list all your liabilities and the outstanding balances. This can include:
    • Mortgage
    • Car loans
    • Student loans
    • Credit card debt
    • Any other debts
  3. Calculate Your Net Worth: Subtract your total liabilities from your total assets. The result is your net worth.

Example:

  • Assets: Savings ($10,000), Investments ($50,000), Real Estate Equity ($100,000), Other Assets ($5,000)
  • Total Assets: $165,000
  • Liabilities: Mortgage ($80,000), Student Loans ($15,000), Car Loan ($10,000), Credit Card Debt ($5,000)
  • Total Liabilities: $110,000
  • Net Worth: Total Assets ($165,000) – Total Liabilities ($110,000) = $55,000

Regularly updating this calculation will help you stay on top of your financial situation and make adjustments as needed. At Surprising Wealth, we encourage you to see this as a tool for empowerment, helping you take control of your financial future and move closer to financial independence.

Fluctuations and Market Volatility

It’s important to remember that your net worth will fluctuate, especially if you have significant investments in the stock market or real estate. Market volatility is normal and can cause temporary drops in your net worth. Don’t stress over these fluctuations—instead, see them as “sales” on your investments, providing opportunities to buy more shares at lower prices. In times of market corrections, focus on other metrics such as the number of shares of index funds you own or the cash flow from your rental properties. These measures can provide a more stable view of your progress and keep you motivated.

Calculating your net worth might seem daunting, but it’s an empowering process that brings clarity and direction to your financial journey. By understanding your current position, you can make informed decisions, set achievable goals, and track your progress towards financial independence. A Bit About Us

Our journey began with humble beginnings. We’ve navigated through the challenges of creating a life and a living we love, while earing low to median incomes. What started as a modest dream of being able to retire someday has turned into a concrete plan. We’ve been on the SlowFI path, consistently saving and investing for 20+ years. Our income over time has stayed roughly in the 50th percentile, so we are truely everyday Americans. We’ve achieved remarkable results through living below our means and consistently investing the difference. Now in our mid-40s, we are in the top 20% for U.S. household wealth for our age group. This has been possible through conscious spending, consistent saving, strategic investing, and a commitment to lifestyle design where we spend generously on things that bring us value and contentment, while cuting back on things we are ambivalent about. It can be daunting when you hear the stories of tech workers or doctors or other people with large income shovels. We want to share how an everyday couple with median US income has built wealth for the future, while also creating a life we love today.

Why Financial Independence?

Financial Independence means having the freedom to make choices that aren’t dictated only by the need for a paycheck. It’s about gaining control over your time and energy, and being able to pursue what truly matters to you. For us, it’s about creating time for friend & family, travel, and the experiences that bring joy and fulfillment.

Join Us on the Journey

In January 2021, I ran some calculations, projected our investment growth, and analyzed our current spending levels. After adjusting our spending assumptions for future inflation, I realized we could replace our earned income (trading time for money) with investment income (our money making money for us) in approximately 10 years. With 90 months left to go, we’re solidly on that path and we want you to join us. Whether you’re just starting out or well on your way to financial independence, Surprising Wealth is here to support and inspire you. Together, we can make every month count and turn dreams into reality.

Thank you for being a part of our community. Let’s embark on this journey to financial independence together!

65 Months to FI – Practicing Looking for the Opportunity

65 months to FI! Just months after deciding to slowly wind down our rental portfolio, life accelerated the plan for us. Three long-term tenants moved out in rapid succession, giving us the unexpected opportunity to sell three properties this year instead of one. Twenty years ago, we couldn’t have imagined how much rental real estate would shape our Financial Independence journey. Today, we’re learning to embrace the evolution of that chapter.

2026 Great Life Goals: Mid-Year Friendship Goal Check-In

2026 Great Life Goals: Mid-Year Friendship Goal Check-In

One of the ideas behind SlowFI is that you don’t postpone living until you reach your financial number. This year’s visits with friends goal has been a wonderful reminder of that. Research consistently shows that strong relationships are one of the biggest predictors of health and happiness. So we simply keep saying yes to inviting friends over, attending bookclubs, and chatting with neighbors. Those tiny choices added up to 79 meaningful connections so far.

70 Months to FI – What Would You Want Less of in 6 Years?

70 months to FI! When you’re far from Financial Independence, you optimize for growth. When you’re closer, you begin optimizing for simplicity. This month’s decision to sell a long-held rental property marks a quiet but meaningful shift in how we’re preparing for the next chapter. As we approach FI, we’re realizing that what once energized us is now beginning to exhausts us. Sometimes the bravest financial decision is letting go of something that once made perfect sense.

Self-Employed Health Insurance: 12% premium increase for 2025

Our 2025 health insurance premium increased by 12%. Healthcare is now our second-largest expense as a self-employed couple. And unlike groceries or travel, this isn’t an area where we can optimize much further. High deductible. No subsidies. Shopping the marketplace every year. As we plan for early retirement, we’re treating healthcare differently than other spending categories.

2025 Great Life Goals: Year End Review

2025 Great Life Goals: Year End Review

In 2025, my Great Life Goals told a story I didn’t fully expect. More time with aging parents. Fewer ocean days than I craved. Travel shaped more by service than adventure. This year, I tracked days with family, visits with friends, travel, ocean time, and walking habits. But what I really measured was alignment. 2025 became a year of proximity to the people who matter most, releasing pressure in hard seasons, and noticing where my spending isn’t yet representing my values. Here’s what my goals revealed about the life I’m building.
